Radical prostatectomy: a focus on urinary continence
نویسندگان
چکیده
• Radical prostatectomy is the most commonly recommended treatment for patients diagnosed with localized prostate cancer who have a long life expectancy. • Radical prostatectomy has three major goals: cancer control, urinary continence and erectile function preservation. • A number of a priori patient characteristics cannot be modified and may eventually have an impact on urinary continence recovery. • However, physicians must make every effort to promote the best possible urinary continence recovery rates and quality by making changes and improvements to all editable elements, such as conservative surgical techniques, pelvic floor exercises and drug therapies.

Evaluating urinary continence and preoperative predictors of urinary continence after robot assisted laparoscopic radical prostatectomy.
PURPOSE We evaluated urinary continence using a validated questionnaire in a series of consecutive patients who underwent robot assisted laparoscopic radical prostatectomy, and identified the preoperative predictors of the return to urinary continence. MATERIALS AND METHODS The clinical records of 308 consecutive patients who underwent robot assisted laparoscopic radical prostatectomy for cli...
متن کاملCombined bladder neck preservation and posterior musculofascial reconstruction during robotic assisted radical prostatectomy: effects on early and long term urinary continence recovery
BACKGROUND To evaluate the effects of combined bladder neck preservation and posterior reconstruction techniques on early and long term urinary continence in patients treated by robotic assisted radical prostatectomy (RARP). METHODS Two-hundred ninety-two patients who previously underwent radical prostatectomy were retrospectively selected for a case-control study, excluding those with anasto...
متن کاملPostoperative phosphodiesterase type 5 inhibitor administration increases the rate of urinary continence recovery after bilateral nerve-sparing radical prostatectomy.
OBJECTIVES To investigate the effect of phosphodiesterase type 5 inhibitor on urinary continence recovery after bilateral nerve-sparing radical prostatectomy. METHODS We analyzed data of 393 open bilateral nerve-sparing radical prostatectomies carried out between 2005 and 2010. Patients who recovered urinary continence within the first month after catheter removal (n = 52) were excluded. This...
